History of the Project
The idea of a memorial to Emily began in 2013, by a local artist and resident, Sarah Dewing, who joined the Council’s committee, formed to develop commemoration events for the centenary of her death. Several events were planned, including a joint celebration with representatives from her home town, Morpeth in Northumberland. This delegation was also invited to the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on the railings on the racecourse, near where she was injured, which was organised by the Jockey Club. However, many felt that there was a need for a more prominent memorial to Emily in Epsom and Ewell, where she died. So after several designs had been submitted Emily was going to get her memorial in recognition of her fight for equal rights for women. Unfortunately, the site and sculpture in 2013 did not happen due to the site being unsuitable, due to a large gas main running under it. Other sites were discussed but the project was put on hold.
The Renewal of the Project
On 6th February 2018 the project was relaunched with Sarah Dewing as chair of the project and now joined by Paul Taylor local businessman and life time resident of Epsom & Ewell. A new panel has been formed with local and national historians, women rights campaigners, the Business community, local council and Phillipa Bilton a relative of Emily Wilding Davison. The project aims to have a life size statue of Emily in Epsom’s town centre

Emily Davison Memorial Project Committee

With the anniversary of her death approaching in 2013 Sarah set up the Emily Davison Memorial Project. As well as chairing EDMP since 2013, she founded Epsom and Ewell Arts Festival: MGSO4 in 2015, serving as Chair and Festival Director.
